LTU - Integrated Design Studio 2 - Montessori Daycare Center

Integrated Design Studio 2 was an extremely exciting studio for me.  All of the IDS 2 classes were doing daycare centers.  Our specific class chose to do a Montessori Daycare Center.  One of my favorite parts of design is learning about new styles and doing the research to make sure the design fits the clients needs.  After doing the research on Montessori schools I found out that they teach the kids to do a lot of things themselves.  Such as pour their own drinks, and getting their own snacks rather than someone getting them everything.  One thing I found out that they do is gardening.  I was really interested in this so that is what I based my design on.
As you can see from the image below the overall shape of the building is similar to a flower.  It has the different sections ("pedals") for the different activities and age groups.  As the children get older them move into larger rooms with more responsibility.  The center is where all of the students and teachers meet to play and have fun.
I received honors for this project which means that my entire design was in the top 10% of all studio classes.  My teachers selected my design as one of the 2 best in my studio of 18 students

The plan below shows how circulation works through the daycare center.  The entrance is to the South and that is where the reception area and infant area is.  It also includes all of the offices for advisors.  Once you leave the reception area you can go straight into the play area in the center.  All of the other classrooms spread off of it and range in size for the different age groups.
